At the UN today, YWCA women were not only in attendance at the celebration of International Women’s Day, but also were among the roster of speakers! Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and Vice President of the World YWCA, Andrea Nunez, were speakers, along with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. John W. Ashe, President of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former United States Secretary of State, U.S. Senator. Phumzile as the Director of UN Women, launched a new campaign “He for She” Campaign, inviting all men and boys to join in the work to be done to achieve gender equality.
The theme this year is “Equality for Women is Progress for All”. See the archived webcast at http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/international-womens-day . YWCA women will remember Phumzile as a former World YWCA Staff, and Andrea as a young woman from the YWCA of Mexico who is currently a World YWCA Vice President. Watch both of the YWCA women as they gave impassioned speeches encouraging us to be bold in our quest for women’s equality.
